Interim Housing Opportunity

New Hampshire Ave Shelter

2024

Greater LA County

Leading a private market effort to achieve quality housing through adaptive reuse.

Project Goal

In partnership with the private market, our goal is to provide severely needed interim housing to the unhoused population in a prime Koreatown location. Programmatic needs were at the forefront of our design; creating staff specific spaces, clean lines of sight, and ample storage options. This site features new building systems, a renovated interior and gated building access.

Challenges

This site presented many challenges throughout the phases of construction. The site was formerly a vacant four unit building, which required a complete renovation to create a single cohesive site. Many building improvements were necessary to produce an environment that incorporated features necessary for a functional interim shelter. It’s proximity to residential neighborhoods, schools, and heavy foot and vehicular traffic made site security and privatized space crucial components of the site.

Solutions

DAECO worked with ownership to execute an adaptive reuse of a fourplex residential building to interim housing. A schematic design was created to renovate the entire site and incorporate critical program components such as case management offices, communal resident spaces, and enhanced fire and ADA features. Our team lead the construction process, ensuring the elements necessary to best serve homeless populations, open lines of sight for staff, exterior community space, and a designated smoking area, were provided for clients to enjoy.
